Madmaheshwar is a quaint little holy town named after the sacred Madhyamaheshwar Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is the fourth Kedar in the panch kedar pilgrimage circuit. Madhmaheshwar is a quiet little hamlet situated at an altitude of 3265 meters is the part of Kedarnath wildlife sancturary and the temple during summers and remains closed during winder months from November till April due to heavy snowfall, the opening and closing dates are decided by pujaris. The trek to Madmaheshwar is graded as a moderate trek as one has to trek 16 Kms from village Ranshi on a well laid trail and passing by small villages of Gaundhar, Bantoli and Nano. Village Ranshi, which is the base to trek to Madmaheshwar, is about 250 Kms from Rishikesh. This trek is a lifelong memorable with beautiful green valley providing views of with many glittering glaciers and snow capped peaks of Chaukhamba, Neel Kanth and Kedarnath in Higher Himalayan ranges. The entire region seems to be blessed with rich flora and fauna and boasts of being the home to abundance of wildlife and some endangered species like the Himalayan Musk Dear and Himalayan Monal Pheasant.

Madmaheshwar temple was built about 1500 years ago and is an ever older temple. The base of this trek to Madmaheshwar is at Village Ranshi which is about 250 Kms from Rishikesh and the route goest past towns of Devprayag – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Ukhimath. It is from here that the 16 km trek begins with a 6 Km descent to Village Gaundhar, 2 Kms of flat terrain till Village Bantoli and then the 8 Km gradual ascent to Madmaheshwar. The trek passes through small villages and the entire trail is lined by thick forest cover of Oak and Deodar trees and offers views of majestic Himalayas.

    Who Can Participate

    • Age Requirement:
      • Minimum 14 years
    • First-timers are welcome, though prior trekking experience is preferred. Good fitness is a must.
    • Fitness Criteria:
      • The Trekker should have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km of distance by jogging in 30 minutes without stress or 10 km of distance in 70 minutes without stress
      • If the trekker prefers cycling he/ she should be able to cycle 18 km of distance in 50 minutes.
      • Preparation Chart
      • If the trekker wants to carry a backpack then he/she should be able to carry a 10-12 kg backpack. If opt Off-load option then the trekker should be able to carry 3-5 kg backpack.

The trek begins from Dharchula, a small border town in Pithoragarh. After a short drive to Sobla, the trail meanders through the picturesque villages of Dar, Sela, Balling, Nagling, and Duktu before reaching the Panchachuli Glacier Base Camp.

You’ll trek along the banks of the Dhauliganga River, walking through thick forests of deodar, bhojpatra, and conifers, past ancient wooden houses, and under the constant gaze of Himalayan peaks.
